Who is a Self-Realized person? What are their characteristics?
An ordinary person's consciousness is limited to that person's body and its connections. Whereas, a Self-Realized person, at will, can feel the entire Creation as his body.
A Self-realized person will have a similar "self-protective" instincts for the entire creation, in their every action, as an ordinary person have that towards his body. He will not inflict any "wound" on any parts of the creation.
In Kural (an universally acceptable 2-liner maxims, covering a wide range of topics, propounded 2000 years ago, in Tamil), Sri Valluvar states the following description for the Self-realized soul:
"A Self-realized person is an embodiment of virtue and has compassionate mercy towards all living beings." (30)
In addition, while giving the definition for the penance, which is the means for attaining the Self-realized state (it is needless to say this definition applies to the end-state as well!), the Master states:
"True penance consists of enduring the pain, which is beyond his control to cure, and not inflicting pain upon any other beings" (261)
The Original (in Tamil):
அந்தணர் என்போர் அறவோர் மற்று எவ்வுயிர்க்கும்
செந்தண்மை பூண்டு ஒழுகலான்.
- Holy Kural 30 of 1330.
உற்ற நோய் நோன்றல்; உயிர்க்கு உறுகண் செய்யாமை
அற்றே தவத்திற்கு உரு.
- Holy Kural 261 of 1330.
- PHD
